The idea mainly is to have the above horses one run benefit in the same class and with decent jockey will go for a win.

For instance in the race The Lieutenant won the other 3 runners did not have a run in Class III which went against them. 

Another clue to The Leiutinant's chances was that it cleared the maiden status the first time it was saddled whereas it took a run or two for the other contenders to shed the maiden tag.
